We, women, are known for taking care of everyone else and forgetting about ourselves. I believe it is important to have a balance of taking care of ourselves and taking care of our families. If you think about it, if we don’t take care of our own mental health, spiritual health, emotional health, and physical health how can we take care of our family and friends. This week is Women Health Week! This is a week set aside for women to consider making their health a priority in their schedules. Here are some things women need to be aware of:

  • Hypertension: a silent killer and many women don’t know they have it
  • Obesity: one out of every three women are obese
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Diabetes
  • Respiratory conditions: such as COPD, lung disease, and asthma
  • Now Covid-19: Now that this virus is going around we want to protect our families, but we forget to protect ourselves.

Here are some tips:

  • Talk to your health provider often. Get your blood work done, blood pressure checked, and an examination.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay active
  • Eat heart healthy
  • Take care of your mental health
  • Find healthy ways to manage stress
  • Practice good sleep habits
  • Monitor alcohol intake
  • Look out for your lungs by doing diaphragmatic breathing, deep breathing, or meditation.
  • Find what works for you
  • Focus on you
  • Put yourself on your schedule
  • Instead of making changes, create habits
  • Change your environment to meet your wellness goals
  • Set attainable goals
  • Realize you only have one body
  • Read food labels
  • Keep track of your numbers, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, inflammation rate
  • Eat healthy
