Bone broth is a healing food. It heals the gut. It also adds help for the joints if you have arthritis or your joints just hurt from other illnesses. It is super simple to make too.

I first came across making my own bone broth from doing research on the Paleo Diet and reading and trying recipes from Sarah Ballantyne’s cookbook.

You can use any type of bone you like. For me, I use mainly chicken, but I have also used pig bones, beef bones, ham hocks. I usually roast my bones before I put them in my crockpot because it brings out their flavors into your bone broth.

My recipe:

  1. Take your chicken carcass or bones or feet put them into the crockpot.
  2. Add Garlic cloves whole, you don’t need to smash them or grate them.
  3. Add a hand full of sprigs of Thyme about 10 to 20, you don’t need to remove the leaves from the stems. Throw them into the pot.
  4. Add 4 stems of dill, no need taking it off the stem. Throw them in.
  5. Then fill the crock pot with water to the top of the pot.
  6. Cook for 12 hours.
  7. When done, get a fine strainer. I have a stainless steel one that I use and strain the bones and herbs from the broth and store the broth in mason jars. I store mine in my fridge.

You can make all kinds of stuff with the broth. You can make rice, instead of water use the broth. You can simply drink a cup of the broth. You can make soup. You can use it in anything you would like. It usually lasts a week in the fridge. If you want to make it last longer you can put it in the freezer, just don’t store them in the mason jars, because the jars break in the freezer.

Thank you Jamie Holloway for your recipe!
